   I’m a father of two. I have a 3 yr old, and a 1 yr. old and this is more and more a concern for me especially with what they’re saying regarding the “common core” program. It seems completely overwhelming to me to think that I would have to take it on myself to have to home school my children especially when I have financial and personal impediments to doing so (at this time). But I’ve often thought that instead of having my kids go to a Catholic school, there should exist protestant “family group” programs out there. I never hear of anything like this yet, when I hear about “homeschooling” by Christians, this never comes up as an option. It seems Christians (or) Protestants don’t group up in order to do homeschooling? If it’s okay for the Catholics, Why aren’t the Protestants doing it??

   Is there anything out there like this?? If you know any in the NYC area, please let me know.
   I recently had to consider whether to switch my son to a Catholic preschool program to save more money or leave him in his secular program … and decided I’d rather leave him.

   It’s a double-edge sword indeed. Any suggestions?

      I completely understand your concerns, and especially the constraints you are working with. Every family has their own particular set of challenges. The best advice someone has ever give me is that we should give our child the best possible education given the situation we find ourselves in. Don’t feel condemned and defeated, but press on toward the goal of giving your child the most Christianly education possible. Perhaps you could be reading and studying about Christian education in order to supplement your children’s public school education. I would start with “The Core” by Leigh Bortins and then check out “Classical Christian Education” and “Recovering The Lost Tools of Learning” by Douglas Wilson.

      Regarding homeschool groups, I would highly recommend Classical Conversations. This is the group my family is a part of and I have been impressed. They provide you with a format for your education (so curriculum planning is not a big deal) and they meet once per week as a group in a classroom setting where each age group has a tutor. Check out their website, http://www.classicalconversations.com, to see if there is a local group in your area.
